Code of Conduct for the Tourists

  • Smoking is banned in the public places; dispose of cigarette butts thoughtfully if you are not in a public place; help prevent forest fires.
  • Do not use and ask for plastic bags, Sikkim is amongst the first to ban its usage.
  • In Sikkim dumping rubbish attracts fine up to Rs. 5000 and imprisonment of 6 months.
  • Photographing people; courtesy demands that you take permission.
  • Do not embarrass others by relieving yourself in public; use toilets.
  • Please do not spit; it’s a disgusting that spreads diseases.
  • Reduce litter; carry back all your rubbish to your hotel for proper disposal.
  • If you see litter do not hesitate, please pick it up and carry it back with you.
  • Patronize eco-friendly products; responsible citizens encourage recycling.
  • Use water sparingly; it is scarce, valuable resources in the Himalaya.
  • Reuse linen; help reduce the quantity of detergents used every day.
  • Enjoy the beauty of our mountains; help keep Sikkim clean and green.
  • Respect local customs, beliefs and traditions; this makes Sikkim unique.
  • Monasteries are place of worship; please do not disturb monks at prayers.
  • Traditionally we walk around chortens and monasteries clockwise only.
  • Do not deface monuments; trees and a utility with graffiti; it is despicable.
  • Do not make noise and play loud music, maintain and enjoy the serenity.
  • Rowdy, loutish behaviors and teasing is inexcusable. Respect other’s privacy.
  • Honking is a bad manner; please discourage excessive usage of motor horns.
  • Avoid overtaking especially at road blocks; you will only add to the confusion.
  • Do not encourage touts and beggars; help keep Sikkim the way it is.
  • Discourage trade in wildlife product, please report to the police.
  • Do not pick flowers and uproot plants; they look better where they are.
  • Be friendly, responsible and eco-visitor.
